1.4. Engage stakeholders

Engaging stakeholders means identifying the people, groups, or organizations that can affect or be affected by the project, understanding their needs and influence, and involving them in a way that supports project objectives.

This task includes stakeholder identification, analysis, tailored communication, execution of the stakeholder engagement plan, alignment of stakeholder needs with project objectives, and building trust. Effective stakeholder engagement helps the project manager reduce resistance and increase support.

Why This Task Matters for PMP® Preparation

PMP® exam questions often describe situations where stakeholders are ignored, dissatisfied, misinformed, resistant, or not aligned with the project direction. The best response usually involves identifying stakeholders, analyzing their needs, communicating appropriately, and engaging them early.

You should be ready to recognize that stakeholder engagement is proactive. Waiting until stakeholders complain is usually weaker than involving them, understanding their expectations, and building trust before problems grow.
