PMP® Certification Audit Process

When you submit your PMP® application, you agree that PMI may audit the information you provided. An audit means PMI asks you to verify your education, project management training, and professional project experience before you can continue with the certification process.

Most audit selections are random, but PMI may also select applications for audit when required by its certification policies. Being selected for audit does not mean you did anything wrong. It means PMI needs supporting documentation before your application can move forward.

If you are selected for audit, you cannot pay the certification fee, receive eligibility information, or schedule the PMP® exam until the audit is successfully completed.

What PMI May Request

During an audit, PMI may ask you to provide documents that confirm the information entered in your PMP® application. This may include:

  • Copies of your diploma, degree, or global equivalent.
  • Verification from supervisors or managers for the professional project experience listed in your application.
  • Certificates or letters confirming your project management education/training hours.

Before submitting your PMP® application, make sure your education documents, training certificate, project dates, supervisor or manager contacts, and project descriptions are accurate and can be verified.

It is also useful to contact supervisors or managers in advance if you may need them to confirm your project experience. Their verification should support the project information you submitted to PMI.

How to Complete the Audit

If PMI selects your application for audit, follow the instructions in your PMI.org account and myPMI dashboard. PMI will tell you which documents are required and how to submit them.

Prepare all requested materials carefully before submitting the audit package. Make sure the documents are complete, consistent with your application, and easy for PMI to verify.

PMI normally gives candidates a limited period to submit audit documentation. After the full audit package is submitted, PMI reviews the materials and notifies you of the result.

What Happens After the Audit

If PMI confirms that your audit is successful, your certification process can continue. You will then be able to proceed to the next steps, such as payment and exam scheduling.

If you do not submit the required audit documentation, ignore the audit request, or cannot verify the information in your application, PMI may fail the audit and restrict your ability to reapply for a period of time.

Do not ignore an audit request. Respond carefully, provide only accurate documentation, and make sure all information matches your PMP® application.

After PMI confirms that your audit is complete, return to KnowledgeMap and mark this step as completed. Then continue to the payment and exam scheduling steps in your certification process.
